Capability

Track keyword movement in context, not as a wall of rankings

A rank tracker that reports four thousand positions has told you nothing. WindspeedSEO tracks the queries that carry commercial weight, ties each one to the page that owns it, and surfaces movement only when it crosses a threshold that justifies attention.

Rankings are a means, not the measurement

Position is a useful diagnostic and a terrible goal. It is diagnostic because a sustained drop usually has a cause worth finding. It is a bad goal because a page can gain three positions and lose revenue, or hold position while a competitor takes the clicks with a better title.

WindspeedSEO therefore treats tracked position as one input among several. Every tracked query sits next to its Search Console clicks, impressions and click-through rate, the analytics value of the page that owns it, and any competitor movement on the same result set. The finding is only raised when those signals agree that something real happened.

Only the declining query above crossed the alert threshold. It was raised as a finding because the owning page also lost clicks and a competitor published overlapping coverage in the same period.

Which SEO KPIs are worth tracking

Choosing the tracked set

Commercial intent first

Queries where someone is choosing a supplier, comparing options or ready to act. These justify a defended position.

One owning page each

Every tracked query is mapped to the page that should rank for it, which also exposes cannibalisation where two pages compete.

Realistic entry

Queries where entering the result set is plausible for your site today, rather than aspirational terms you will never reach.

Recorded keyword research values used during planning are point-in-time measurements. They are preserved as measured and refreshed deliberately rather than adjusted to make a chart look better.

Frequently asked questions

How does WindspeedSEO’s keyword rank tracker work?

It maintains a tracked set of commercially relevant queries, records position over time from bounded SERP data, and joins that to Search Console’s own click, impression and average-position figures for the same queries. Each tracked query is mapped to the page that should own it, so a position change points at a specific page rather than at an abstraction.

How many keywords should I track?

Fewer than most tools encourage. A tracked set of a few dozen genuinely commercial queries produces better decisions than several thousand, because every tracked query you cannot act on is noise competing for the same attention.

The long tail is still measured through Search Console; it just does not need a tracked position to be useful.

Why does my tracked position differ from what I see in Google?

Because there is no single position. Results are personalized, localized, device-dependent and time-dependent, and Search Console reports an average position across impressions rather than a single ranking. A tracked position is a consistent sample taken the same way each time, which makes it good for measuring change and unreliable as an absolute truth.

WindspeedSEO therefore emphasizes movement over the exact integer.

What counts as meaningful keyword movement?

Movement that crosses a threshold and persists. A query drifting between positions six and eight across a week is normal variance. The same query moving from four to eleven and staying there is a finding — especially if the page that owns it also lost clicks and a competitor gained coverage in the same period.

Alerts are tuned to that second case.

Does rank tracking include local or mobile results?

Tracked measurement is taken consistently so that comparisons remain valid over time, and Search Console supplies device and country breakdowns for the same queries alongside it. Where local intent dominates a query, that is noted as context, because a national position on a locally-resolved query is misleading on its own.

How does rank tracking connect to the rest of the platform?

Directly. A declining tracked query is cross-referenced against analytics value for the owning page, technical findings affecting that page, and competitor movement on the same result set. That is what turns “position dropped” into a ranked recommendation with a probable cause attached.

Is rank tracking available on Insights?

Yes. Tracked keyword monitoring is part of the intelligence layer on both plans. On Managed Automation, a decline that warrants a page refresh can additionally be turned into assigned, verified implementation work.

Track the queries that pay, not all of them

Keyword monitoring, page ownership and threshold-based alerting are included on both plans.
