Capability

See where competitors earn visibility - and where your site has room to grow

Your search competitors are whoever holds the results you want, which is often not the companies your sales team names. WindspeedSEO identifies them from SERP evidence, shows what they cover that you don’t, and filters that down to the overlaps actually worth pursuing.

Start from the results, not from the org chart

Ask most teams to list their competitors and you get the companies they lose deals to. Ask a search engine and you get a different list: a trade publication, two marketplaces, a comparison site and one actual rival. Both lists matter, but only the second one explains why your pages rank where they do.

WindspeedSEO builds the second list from evidence — which domains recur across your commercial query set, and how much of that set each one holds — and then keeps it current, because search competition changes without anyone announcing it.

Competitor identification

Ranked by overlap with your commercial query set, with business competitors and search-only competitors distinguished.

Shared query analysis

Which queries you both compete for, who currently holds them, and how that has changed period over period.

Coverage overlap

Topics a competitor covers that you do not, filtered for whether the topic has commercial relevance to your business.

Movement alerts

Notification when a competitor takes a position you held on a query that matters, or publishes directly against one of your commercial pages.

Authority context

Referring-domain context from external providers, reported as third-party estimates rather than as anyone’s internal metric.

Entry realism

A judgement on whether entering a result set is plausible for your site today, so effort goes where it has a chance.

Using competitor evidence responsibly

Third-party competitive metrics are estimates. Traffic figures, authority scores and keyword counts from any external provider are modeled numbers, not the competitor’s analytics, and WindspeedSEO presents them that way rather than dressing an estimate up as a fact.

The practical consequence is that competitor data is best used for direction, not for precision. “This domain holds most of our commercial queries and has been gaining” is a sound conclusion. “Their traffic is exactly 41,300 visits” is not, no matter which tool printed it.

For the method behind this, read the competitor analysis guide, or see the WindspeedSEO overview for how it feeds prioritization.

Frequently asked questions

How does an SEO competitor analysis tool identify competitors?

From the search results themselves. WindspeedSEO looks at which domains repeatedly appear for the queries you care about and ranks them by how much overlap they have with your commercial query set — rather than asking you to nominate rivals from memory.

That routinely surfaces marketplaces, publishers and comparison sites that compete for attention without competing for customers, which is worth knowing before you copy their strategy.

What is the difference between a business competitor and a search competitor?

A business competitor sells what you sell. A search competitor occupies the results your buyers see. The two overlap less than people expect: a trade publication or a directory can dominate your commercial queries without ever taking a customer from you.

Confusing the two leads to strategies aimed at the wrong opponent — trying to out-rank a publisher on informational terms rather than winning the commercial ones.

What competitor data does WindspeedSEO actually use?

Publicly observable search evidence, plus bounded paid keyword, SERP and backlink intelligence from external providers. Everything used is externally observable — nothing comes from inside anyone’s analytics.

Provider metrics are reported as what they are: third-party estimates, not the competitor’s own numbers, and never presented under another vendor’s brand.

How often is competitor movement checked?

On a bounded schedule, because each refresh of paid SERP and keyword data has a real cost attached. Movement that crosses a materiality threshold — a competitor taking a position you held on a commercial query, or new coverage appearing directly against one of your pages — is surfaced as a finding rather than left in a table.

Does this tell me what to write?

It tells you where a gap exists and why it looks worth filling: which queries a competitor covers that you do not, whether those queries carry commercial intent for your business, and what page type would be the appropriate response. Turning that into a brief happens in content gap analysis.

On Managed Automation, the resulting article can be generated and published for you.

Should I try to match every competitor page?

No, and that instinct is the most common way competitor analysis wastes a budget. Coverage is only worth matching where the query has real commercial relevance to you, where you have some plausible claim to authority, and where the existing results are not so entrenched that entry is unrealistic. WindspeedSEO filters on exactly those criteria before recommending anything.

Is competitor analysis included on both plans?

Yes. Identification, overlap analysis and movement monitoring are part of the intelligence layer on Insights and Managed Automation alike. Only the execution of the resulting work differs.
