GEO vs AEO vs SEO: what actually changes?

GEO, AEO and SEO are three acronyms describing heavily overlapping work. This guide separates what genuinely changes when answers replace links from what is the same discipline wearing a new label — and it is more of the latter than the terminology suggests.

The short answer

Three acronyms, one discipline, three surfaces. The measurement differs meaningfully. The work differs much less than the volume of commentary implies.

What each term describes
TermSurfaceMeasured inPrimary work
SEOSearch results pagesPositions, clicks, impressionsContent, technical health, authority
AEODirect answers and featured resultsAnswer presence, zero-click impressionsDirect answers, clear structure, accurate facts
GEOGenerated AI answersMentions, citations, prominenceDirect answers, entity consistency, genuine depth

Read the right-hand column again. Three of the four items appear in all three rows.

What genuinely changes

Fewer sources per answer

A results page shows ten links. An answer cites two or three. Being fourth used to earn traffic; it may now earn nothing.

Measurement variance

Positions are stable enough to track precisely. Generated answers are not, which forces frequency-based measurement.

Mentions without links

Being named without being linked has value that no click-based analytics will ever record.

Entity clarity matters more

Systems synthesising an answer need to identify you confidently. Inconsistent descriptions of your business cost more here.

Extractability matters more

Content that buries its answer under a thousand words of preamble is harder to use as a source.

No diagnostic tooling

There is no Search Console for AI answers — no impressions report, no coverage errors, no submission process.

How to track the new surface

What stays the same

Content that genuinely answers a question. Accurate, checkable facts. Clear structure and sensible headings. Consistent information about who you are and what you do. Technical foundations that let your pages be found and read at all. Topical depth in the areas you should be known for.

That list has been the answer for a long time. It remains the answer, which is unexciting and happens to be true.

How to allocate effort sensibly

  1. Keep the foundations working. A page excluded from the index is invisible on every surface, including AI answers.
  2. Write to be extracted. Answer directly, then elaborate. This helps human readers too, which is a reliable sign it is not a fad.
  3. Fix entity consistency. One description of your business, used everywhere. Cheap to do, and it compounds.
  4. Measure both surfaces. You cannot notice a shift you are not tracking.
  5. Reallocate on evidence. When your own AI-visibility data starts correlating with inquiries, move effort. Not before.

The hype caveat

This area currently produces a great deal of confident advice built on very little published evidence. Techniques get asserted, spread, and are rarely tested. A reasonable filter: if a claim about GEO cannot be traced to either a published mechanism or a repeatable measurement, treat it as a hypothesis.

Frequently asked questions

What do GEO, AEO and SEO actually mean?

SEO is search engine optimization: earning visibility in search results. AEO, answer engine optimization, refers to being the source of a direct answer rather than one link among ten. GEO, generative engine optimization, refers to appearing in answers generated by AI systems.

They describe different surfaces, not different disciplines. The underlying work overlaps heavily.

Is GEO actually different from SEO?

The measurement is different — mentions and citations rather than positions, with much higher variance. The work is mostly the same: clear content that answers questions directly, accurate and consistent information about your business, genuine depth on topics you should be known for.

Anyone describing GEO as an entirely new discipline requiring entirely new techniques is describing a service offering rather than an observed reality.

Do I need a separate GEO strategy?

Almost certainly not a separate strategy. You may need additional measurement, because AI visibility does not appear in Search Console and will otherwise go untracked.

Running a parallel content program aimed at assistants generally produces worse content and no demonstrated advantage.

Which of these should I prioritize?

Follow your own data. For most businesses, classic search still drives the majority of measurable organic demand, so it deserves the majority of the effort. Measure AI visibility so you know when that balance shifts for your market, and shift when it does rather than in anticipation.

Does structured data help with answer engines?

Structured data helps machines understand what is on your page, which is useful across all three surfaces. What it cannot do is assert things your page does not visibly say — markup describing content that is not present is a misuse that risks penalties and provides no benefit.

Will classic SEO stop mattering?

Nothing in the current evidence supports that conclusion. Search behavior is changing, and some informational queries are being answered without a click, but commercial search — people looking for a supplier, a product, a price — still overwhelmingly involves results pages.

The reasonable position is to measure both surfaces and let your own numbers decide the allocation.
